⭐ The Dragon Who Looked Up

Young Starling Embercrest had an unusual habit for a dragon. He spent more time staring at the sky than the mountains beneath his claws. While other hatchlings practiced flame‑loops or hoarded shiny river stones, Starling traced constellations with the tip of his tail and whispered the names of distant nebulae he’d invented himself.

He dreamed of exploring the stars. He imagined gliding between silver moons, hearing the quiet hum of the cosmic winds, and discovering what lay beyond the dark velvet horizon.

Yet his days were filled with the sort of wonders most creatures would write sagas about.

On his morning glide, he passed a waterfall that flowed upward for an hour each day at dawn, its shimmering spray drifting like reversed rain. Starling barely glanced at it; he’d seen it every day of his life.

At midday, he spotted the Moss Giant who napped beneath the sunlit cliffs. The giant’s snores shaped the clouds above into drifting animals — sky‑stags, cloud‑serpents, and once, a perfect woolly mammoth. Starling only waved politely and continued on.

Later, he helped a family of moon‑mice gather glowing berries from Nightroot Thicket. The berries pulsed with soft light, illuminating the mice’s whiskers like tiny lanterns. Starling hummed as he worked, thinking of galaxies.

And when evening came, he perched on his favorite ridge to watch the neighboring Phoenix choir rehearse. The mythic birds’ fiery wings cast warm light across the valley as they sang harmonies that made the air crackle and hiss. Starling listened with half an ear, eyes fixed on the first star that appeared overhead.

It wasn’t until the Moss Giant shambled over and sat ponderously beside him that Starling paused.

“You look up so much,” the giant observed. “But not only to watch my clouds. Tell me, young one, do you ever look around?”

Starling blinked. Around him, the valley glowed with upward waterfalls, cloud‑creatures, moonlit mice, and phoenix fire. Wonders layered upon wonders, all part of his ordinary day.

“I suppose I forget,” he admitted.

The giant smiled. “Dream of the stars, yes. But don’t miss the constellations already walking beside you.”

Starling looked again – really looked – and for the first time, the world around him felt as vast and mysterious as any galaxy he’d imagined.

That night, he still watched the sky,but he also watched the valley, realizing that both were full of the same shimmering possibilities.
