Dragon riders, deadly trials, and a dangerous romance are headed to television. Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced the two lead actors for its upcoming adaptation of Fourth Wing, the bestselling fantasy novel by Rebecca Yarros.

Esther McGregor will portray Violet Sorrengail, while Emilio Sakraya will take on the role of Xaden Riorson.

The casting announcement, confirmed by Amazon on October 21, 2026, marks another major step toward bringing the enormously popular Empyrean book series to Prime Video.

Welcome to Basgiath War College

For readers unfamiliar with Fourth Wing, the story follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old woman who expected a relatively quiet life among books.

Instead, her commanding mother forces her to enter Basgiath War College, where aspiring dragon riders compete for a place among the kingdom of Navarre’s elite warriors.

The problem? Becoming a dragon rider is extraordinarily dangerous. Not everyone survives the training, and the dragons themselves aren’t necessarily interested in cooperating with their would-be riders.

Then there’s Xaden Riorson, a formidable fellow cadet with a complicated history and plenty of reasons to distrust Violet.

What follows is a mixture of fantasy adventure, deadly competition, dragon bonding, and romance.

Meet the New Dragon Riders

Esther McGregor, whose credits include We Were Liars and Babygirl, will portray Violet.

German actor Emilio Sakraya, known for Rhinegold and Warrior Nun, has been cast as Xaden.

Rebecca Yarros welcomed the announcement, expressing her excitement about seeing the two actors bring her characters to television.

The adaptation also has some notable talent working behind the scenes.

Meredith Averill, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key, will serve as showrunner.

Lisa Joy, an executive producer of Fallout, is set to direct the pilot episode.

Michael B. Jordan is also involved as an executive producer through his production company, Outlier Society.

But What About the Dragons?

Naturally, that’s the question we’re most interested in at Carpe Draco.

The Empyrean novels feature powerful, intelligent dragons who form bonds with human riders. Those relationships are central to the story, making the dragons considerably more than flying transportation.

For a television adaptation, bringing those creatures convincingly to life will be one of the production’s most interesting challenges.

Will the dragons look magnificent? Will their personalities come through? And will the series capture the excitement of humans forming extraordinary bonds with creatures capable of reducing them to ashes?

We’ll be watching with considerable interest.

When Will Fourth Wing Premiere?

Amazon has not yet announced a premiere date for the series.

For now, fans can celebrate the casting of Violet and Xaden while waiting for additional production announcements.

And if you’re curious about the dragons before they arrive on television, the adventure begins with Rebecca Yarros’ original novel, Fourth Wing.
