The upcoming live-action fantasy film has found its first major star, with Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro planning a larger movie and television universe.
Maya Hawke is trading the supernatural mysteries of Stranger Things for a world of magic, monsters, and powerful wizards.
Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment have announced that Hawke will star in their upcoming live-action adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, the enormously popular fantasy trading card game.
Her character hasn’t been revealed, but her casting marks a significant step forward for the long-awaited project.
From Trading Cards to the Big Screen
First released in 1993, Magic: The Gathering helped launch the modern trading card game phenomenon.
Players collect cards representing magical spells, fantastical creatures, and powerful artifacts, then use them to battle opponents.
But there’s much more to Magic than the cards themselves.
The franchise features an enormous collection of interconnected fantasy worlds, collectively known as the Multiverse. Its stories involve powerful magic users, legendary heroes, dangerous villains, and creatures ranging from goblins and elves to enormous dragons.
According to Hasbro, the franchise has attracted more than 50 million fans worldwide.
That extensive mythology provides plenty of material for a Hollywood adaptation.
Who’s Making the Movie?
Matt Johnson, known for directing BlackBerry, will direct the film and help write its screenplay alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.
Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind Dune and A Minecraft Movie, is partnering with Hasbro Entertainment on the project.
The companies have bigger ambitions than a single movie. Their partnership includes plans to develop an interconnected Magic: The Gathering film and television universe.
A separate animated Magic: The Gathering series is also in production at Netflix.
What Can Fantasy Fans Expect?
For now, the movie’s storyline, additional cast members, and release date remain unannounced.
With more than three decades of fantasy lore to draw upon, the filmmakers have an extraordinary range of possibilities.
Will the movie feature powerful dragons, magical battles, and journeys between fantastical worlds? The source material certainly offers all three, although no specific creatures or storylines have been confirmed for the film.
We’ll be watching to see which parts of the Magic: The Gathering universe make the leap to the big screen.
