Elden Ring Movie Moves Forward with Massive Budget and 2028 Release Date

The fantasy video game adaptation from director Alex Garland has finished filming, with a reported budget approaching $200 million.

One of the biggest fantasy video games of recent years is heading to the big screen, and Hollywood apparently isn’t doing things by halves.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Elden Ring has completed filming and entered post-production, with recent industry reports suggesting a budget between $175 million and $200 million.

That’s a tremendous investment in a fantasy world filled with magic, monsters, ancient mysteries, and some truly terrifying creatures.

The film is being produced by A24, the studio behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 3, 2028.

From Video Game to Fantasy Epic

Released in 2022 by Japanese developer FromSoftware, Elden Ring became an enormous success, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide.

The game takes place in the Lands Between, a shattered fantasy kingdom filled with ruined castles, powerful sorcerers, monstrous enemies, and fallen demigods.

Players become wandering adventurers known as the Tarnished, exploring the kingdom and battling formidable enemies in pursuit of the legendary Elden Ring.

The game’s mythology was developed with help from George R. R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Who’s Making the Elden Ring Movie?

The adaptation is written and directed by Alex Garland, whose previous films include Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War.

Garland is also an enthusiastic Elden Ring player, making him an intriguing choice to translate the game’s mysterious world into a feature film.

The announced cast includes Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce, and Nick Offerman, among others.

Specific character assignments and official story details remain largely undisclosed.

Filming concluded earlier this year, and the movie is now undergoing post-production, the stage when editing, visual effects, sound, and other finishing work take place.

According to recent reporting from Screen International, the production carries an estimated budget of $175 million to $200 million, potentially making it A24’s most ambitious production yet.

Can Elden Ring Work as a Movie?

That’s the really interesting question.

Unlike traditional fantasy adventures, Elden Ring doesn’t tell its story through a straightforward sequence of conversations and quests.

Much of its history is discovered through exploration, mysterious characters, and clues hidden throughout the world.

And its monsters aren’t exactly the sort you’d invite to a family picnic.

Turning that experience into a movie will require Garland to find a compelling story without losing the atmosphere that made the game so memorable.

There’s also the question of dragons.

Elden Ring features several magnificent and extremely dangerous dragons, including the legendary Dragonlord Placidusax.

Will any of them appear in the movie? Nothing has been confirmed, but we certainly hope so.

When Does Elden Ring Arrive?

The Elden Ring movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 3, 2028, with the production filmed for IMAX presentation.

That leaves plenty of time for the filmmakers to bring the Lands Between and its extraordinary inhabitants to life.

For now, we’re waiting to learn more about the story, the characters, and whether any dragons will make the journey to Hollywood.
